| ABOUT the COMPOSER. Considered a refreshing addition to modern classical music, Arlen Clarke's instrumental works have struggled to identify themselves with any of the late-20th century camps of composition. Unquestionably distinguished from rival experimentalists and divided traditionalists, Clarke identifies himself with an aesthetic that is strongly tonal in practice. Drawing from the classical strengths of so many generations before him, both his instrumental and choral works contrast the overt uses of European and American harmonies. In his music, such diverse elements are portrayed with a commanding authority, yet they remain lyrical and pervasively dramatic. Not surprisingly, Clarke adheres to a compositional technique that portrays his traditional, classicist mentality. Arlen Clarke's music - over 250 instrumental and choral works, is for those seeking modern, yet approachable tonal music. |
