The MUSIC of COMPOSER ARLEN CLARKE
|
ABOUT the COMPOSER
Considered a refreshing addition to modern classical music, Arlen Clarke's instrumental works have struggled to identify themselves with any of the late-20th century camps of composition. Unquestionably distinguished from rival experimentalists and divided traditionalists, Clarke identifies himself with an aesthetic that is strongly tonal in practice. In his music, such diverse elements are portrayed with a commanding authority, yet they remain lyrical and pervasively dramatic. Not surprisingly, Clarke adheres to a compositional technique that portrays his traditional, classicist mentality. Arlen Clarke's music - over 250 instrumental and choral works, is for those seeking modern, yet approachable tonal music.

He and his unit returned safely
Requiem for a Soldier is a thirty-minute orchestral work that is unique,
compellingly lyrical and beautiful. Composed to honor the fallen during
the conflict in the Middle East, the compositional process took on a more
personal weight as the composer's son deployed with his cavalry unit in
2008.

REQUIEM For a Soldier was composed for no other reason than
to honor those who have fallen in battle. No amount of artistic
expression can ever fully compensate those who stand ready to
guard us from danger. But it can cause us to pause, and to
render to them our deepest gratitude for having stood at the
vanguard of freedom.
It is because they gave the full measure of their devotion to duty
that they should be remembered and honored. I feel that creating
work in tribute to that sacrifice is the very least an artist can do.
